17세기, 영국의 꽃미남 귀족청년 윌리엄은 동방 세계를 동경해 밀항을 하지만 난파에 의해 그만 탐라(제주도)에 조난을 당하게 된다. 그리고 그런 그와 조우하게 된 철부지 해녀 버진이. 그녀는 조난 당한 윌리엄을 구해주게 되고, 비록 말은 안 통하지만, 친구가 된다. 한편 어떤 이유로 탐라로 귀향온 한양 선비 '박규' 또한 버진이의 집에서 기거하게 되는데…
