Moscow, Russia (November 9, 2010) — ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, document capture, and linguistic technologies and services, today announced the availability of ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries, a comprehensive dictionary application for Apple®’s mobile devices. The product provides a single tool to access vocabulary of many languages, allowing users to easily purchase, download and use high-quality dictionaries on-the-go. ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries offers quick and accurate on-device translation of words and phrases from English, German and Russian to 15 languages including popular European languages such as German, French, Italian and Spanish, and Chinese.
“Lingvo dictionary is a software product with a 20-year history,” commented Katya Solntseva, Director of Mobile Products Department at ABBYY. “At the same time, it is a very dynamic and flexible dictionary that is constantly evolving to support more languages, different platforms and new devices. We are happy to unveil the newest generation of Lingvo dictionary for iOS-based mobile devices, designed as a single entry point to high-quality dictionaries across a range of languages.“
The product delivers a total of 99 dictionaries for 48 different language combinations with English, German and Russian as core translation languages. They include general translation dictionaries, explanatory, idiomatic and various subject dictionaries from authoritative publishers such as Compact Verlag, Russo and more. To provide more efficient word look-up and translation, ABBYY Lingvo automatically combines content from all available dictionaries for a given language pair into a single wordlist. It also provides a single, combined entry for a required keyword or phrase that may contain various translation alternatives, word-use examples, phonetic spellings for keywords, audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers, and inflected forms of words.
Once the application is installed, users can download 23 general dictionaries for different languages free of charge. Users can also easily expand the basic dictionary database with additional premium content dictionaries for more information about the languages they are interested in. Seventy-six additional premium content dictionaries are currently available for purchase directly from within the Lingvo application (the full list of dictionaries with detailed annotations is available at www.abbyy.com/lingvomobile_ios/dictionaries).
Lingvo delivers powerful word look-up capabilities including the “fuzzy search” functionality that allows users to quickly find a word by any of its forms, even if it is spelled incorrectly. When a word is spelled incorrectly, Lingvo provides a list of spelling suggestions to choose from. The application also keeps a history of 100 recently viewed entries for each language pair.
The ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries can be easily installed and managed including the possibility to remove and restore them on mobile devices. Any uninstalled dictionary can be restored without extra payment. To save memory space on a mobile device, audio files are downloaded separately from general content. They can also be deleted and recovered later, if necessary. In addition, the application offers a range of flexible settings such as the possibility to change font style and size of the text in wordlists and dictionary entries.
ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries are available for purchase via the Apple AppStore (accessible through iTunes®). The application supports English and Russian interface languages. The full list of language combinations available for translation can be found at www.abbyy.com/lingvomobile_ios/system_specifications.
Compatible devices include Apple iPod touch® and iPhone® 2G, 3G, 3GS and 4 (iOS 3.0 or later). Support for Apple iPad™ will be added shortly.
