Classic Game Developers Hitch a Ride on the i-way

Via Skyworks® Interactive, creators of classic Atari-era favorites release “Arcade Hoops”

for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Available on iTunes

Hackensack, NJ, Nov. 4, 2008: Who but the youngest among us doesn’t recall whiling away hours on their Atari machine playing classic games like Pitfall, Decathlon or Donkey Kong? These games were easy to pick up, yet incredibly challenging, addictive, and above all fun. Now, two of the superstar designers of the Classic Game era are setting their sights on the iPhone and iPod touch, with the launch of Arcade Hoops.

David Crane and Garry Kitchen, classic game legends and co-founders of Activision and Absolute Entertainment (respectively), gave many of us our first introduction to video games with classic Atari 2600 titles like Pitfall, Donkey Kong, Keystone Kapers, and Decathlon.  Now they are putting their skills to work at Skyworks Interactive, a leading developer of casual games (and the company behind the ESPN Arcade). The latest platform to benefit from their handiwork is the iPhone/iPod touch, with the release of Arcade Hoops.  Arcade Hoops, a high speed simulation of the familiar arcade machine, challenges players to see how many baskets they can sink in 45 seconds.  Life-like physics, realistic 3D graphics and a choice of three high energy soundtracks accompany the action – for the most fun humanly possible in under a minute.

And as if that weren’t enough, an advanced Progressive level features a moving basket and a chance to score even more points.

“Arcade Hoops was a true collaboration between David and myself.  David developed the original game for the web and was the obvious choice to bring it over to the iPhone.  But with David busy on other top secret projects I couldn’t wait any longer so I adapted it to the iPhone platform myself,” said Garry Kitchen, Arcade Hoops programmer and Skyworks COO. “We hope the audience will find Arcade Hoops to be at least as irresistible as any of our classic games.”

Arcade Hoops is just the first of a series of iPhone and iPod touch games planned from Skyworks. Several more will follow by year end, all promising the type of realistic and fast paced action that will set a new standard for iPhone and iPod touch games.

Relax with your iPhone; iDream

In order to accumulate power for the exhausting day, a new trend dawns called PowerNapping. It means the short sleep or the recreation during lunch break, which helps you to regain your lost energy. To get you faster in the tranquil mood a new one-buck App appeared on the iTunes-Store: iDream (iTunes-Link).

iDream comes with ten conspicuous ambience simulations, reaching from mountain stream to log cabin, which get boosted through a visualization similar to phototherapy. The integrated timer can avoid the sleep getting to deep or taking to long; and every break can be used efficiently for dreaming. . .

The best iPhone games

The Boston Herald listed their top iPhone games as follows:

1) Texas Hold ’Em- Apple Inc- ($4.99) - Great graphics with near live-looking cutaways. Easy to play, if you know poker. The WiFi gaming is a breeze and sets this game apart from the others. Don’t miss the Apple memorabilia tucked into the background. Great price.

2) Moto Racer - Freeverse – ($9.99) — A compelling racer that delivers speed and the added attraction of an occasional fisticuffs. Even on the easy level, this game is challenging.

3) Enigmo - Pangea Software – ($9.99) - Playing on the water theme, this game captivated my children for several hours as they tried to catch drips, followed by lasers and plasma, to their final destinations by using whatever movable gadgets and gizmos happened to be on the screen. This game won an Apple Design Award as the best iPhone game.

4) Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D -Vivendi Mobile Games – ($9.99) - Fun, quirky, very addictive. Using weapons against your opponents is what driving should be all about. What, someone cut me off on Massachusetts Ave? Where’s that ’switch places’ button.

5) Scrabble – Electronic Arts – ($9.99) - I’ll admit this ranking may be swayed by the fact that I’m a Scrabble fan. This version makes me a better player with scores coming in the 300s, even without using the ’Best Word’ cheat. Somehow other reviewers missed the fact that when you shake your device, the tiles rearrange themselves on your easel.

6) Monkey Ball - Sega –($9.99) - Given the buildup this game received, the little monkey rolling inside a pet hamster-type plastic ball delivers challenging fun. I say this even though I have yet to get past level 7

7) MotionX Poker – Fullpower Technologies Inc – ($4.99) - Not as sophisticated as Texas Hold ‘Em and certain to give non-poker players a skewed view on the likelihood of getting three straight flushes in a row, this game nonetheless is a great play. Also check out the free MotionX dice – great for when you lose the real dice that go with your board games..

8) Aurora Feint – Danielle Casley and Jason Citron – It’s free, but also it is not finished. This mixture of a puzzler, see number 9, and the best elements of role-playing games. Mining in the puzzle zones will earn you gems to buy all sorts of goodies. Can’t wait to see the finished version (and it’s price.)

9) Solar Quest –Neon Surge – ($2.99) - This scrolling arcade-style futuristic piloting game moves up a few notches because of its great price. Static background graphics are superb.

10) Aqua Forest- Hudson Entertainment –($7.99) -What is this game? Please, someone let me in on why sloshing water, creating areas of containment, cutting cords, and doing dozens of others tricks is so much fun. Is there a point to it? Does there have to be one? Is there anything else like this? Is it bad writing to throw in four consecutive questions?

This article was posted on Herald back in August, however there have been several noteable new games for the iPhone that have come on the scene since then.

My favorite tie waister is Fieldrunners:

Fieldrunners for the iPhone is similar to Command and Conquer on the desktop.  See my full review here.

Another game that has made it’s way to my iPhone is the free game, Trace.  Trace is a puzzle game in which you try to move a stick figure through the puzzle by drawing lines on the screen for him to walk on.  Some of the levels are a bit challenging and you race against the clock to finish the given level as quickly as possible.  The only down side to this game is that it is difficult to accuratly place the lines at your intended location on the touch screen of the iPhone.  This can either add to your time or cause some collateral damage to your stick man inventory as you attempt to navigate with a misplaced line.

As I find more games that have found at least a temporary home on my iPhone I will let you know.

How about you, what wastes your time on the iPhone???

iPhone 2.2 to allow podcast downloads

German blog Schimanke.com publishes new screenshots from the iPhone 2.2 firmware that reveal that Apple has activated iTunes and App Store features that will make their debut in the next iPhone update. Prior to this past week, these new features had not been fully enabled.

The new iTunes Store screenshots confirm that Apple will be delivering over-the-air downloads for both video and audio podcasts. According to Schimanke, podcast downloads will be limited to episodes less than 10MB in size when using the cellular network.

The screenshots also show off the new App Store category view with icons embedded. Additional 2.2 features previously revealed include the addition of Google Street View and Japanese Emoji icons.

Meanwhile, there has been no evidence of background “push” notifications which were originally promised in September. Unconfirmed whispers suggest that the Apple has delayed the push notification service due to major issues with the initial implementation.

Apple seeded Beta 2 of the 2.2 iPhone firmware to developers in late October but has given no indication when we can expect a public release.

The best game for the iPhone, Fieldrunners

Fieldrunners for the iPhone
Fieldrunners for the iPhone

There are a lot of games available for the iPhone.  I have tried my share of them, Crash Kart, Real Soccer 09, Texas Hold-Em, Enigmo, X-Plane, etc.  But there is only one game for the iPhone that has kept me coming back to play again and again; that game is Fieldrunners.

Fieldrunners is an addictive game that is simple to play but offers action, strategy, and a whole lot of fun.  If you have ever played Command and Conquer on the PC then you will feel at home with Fieldrunners.  The object of the game is simple, keep the enemy troops from moving across the screen.  You have at your disposal several weapons to help you at your task that each cost a varying amount of your cash.  You earn more cash by killing the troops that attempt to pass through the battle zone.  The enemy troops come in waves, with different troops having different strengths and weaknesses.  It is your task to develop a defensive strategy that can withstand the different troops that attack.  Once 20 troops have crossed the battle field your game is over.

Fieldrunners records your high scores and the number of levels you have progressed through.  The game ends after you have survived 100 waves of attack, but there are 3 different levels to try to win at.  The game is simple but it is this type of casual game that works very well on the iPhone.  Games can be saved and restarted any time you have a few spare moments.

If you are looking for a great game for the iPhone, head over to the App Store and search for Fieldrunners, it’s one of the best games going on the iPhone.

Visual Metronome is a metronome for the iPod and iPod Touch that provides both audio and visual beat indication. How is Visual Metronome different from other iPhone / iPod Touch metronomes?

1. Visual Metronome keeps accurate time. The audio engine in Visual Metronome has been engineered to provide the most accurate timing possible, and we believe that Visual Metronome is the most accurate metronome available. See the Visual Metronome website for detailed timing comparisons between Visual Metronome and other iPhone metronome applications.

2. Clear, minimal interface - Visual Metronome prominently displays the current beat instead of showing gratuitous animations.

3. Adjustable accents - place accents where you want them, not just on the downbeat. Both visual and audio accents are available.

4. Easy to hit tap tempo - tap anywhere in the large beat display to set the tempo while the metronome is playing or paused.

5. Easily adjustable manual tempo - press your finger on the BPM indicator and then drag up and down for large tempo changes; press the + and - buttons for finer control.

6. Did I mention the better timing? Many of the metronomes available in the App Store are off by almost 1/5 a beat after playing for just 3 seconds. Check out the website for comparisons!

Category:
Games
Price: $1.99 (iTunes)

src="http://appshopper.com/images/screenshots/292/418090.jpg"
align="right">Description:

iDefend is a dynamic Tower Defense game for the iPod Touch and the iPhone.

If you've never played a TD game, the rules are simple. In each level several waves of enemies try to go through a maze, your goal is to stop them. To do so you have to put towers in strategic locations along their way.

iDefend features 36 levels of varying difficulty to unlock.

iDefend has three different types of towers:
-the basic laser tower is cheap and constantly shoots at a single enemy in its range, doing moderate damage
-the missile tower launches homing bombs that do heavy damage to all the enemies around them when they explode
-the stun tower slows enemies in its range but does minimal damage

iDefense is designed to be played in relatively short sessions. Each level shouldn't take more than a few minutes to beat; that doesn't mean you will be able to beat a level in one go, shorter play time doesn't mean it won't get challenging!
