Now it’s available for the iPhone and iPod Touch too!

In most other brick games, balls don’t really behave like real balls at all. When a ball hits a corner, for example, it just goes back in the opposite direction. And balls usually go straight through each other. Not so with Colibricks.

The purpose-built physics engine in Colibricks calculates each ball’s trajectory exactly, using precise mathematical formulas, so they bounce off corners just like a real ball would, and even collide with each other. The antialiased 3D graphics use sub-pixel positioning so that balls can move really slowly without jumping one pixel at a time. It all looks very real and precise, and all motion is smooth as butter.

But of course it’s also just a lot of fun to play! Forget those boring old rectangular grids of bricks, Colibricks has rotated bricks that can form circles and spirals, for example. Some bricks also move.

And of course there are lots of special bricks that give you points, equipment like the laser or magnet, a bigger or smaller paddle (or even a double one with a gap in the middle), and can even grow or shrink balls. That’s right, you may end up with a screen full of balls of different sizes, from giant boulders to tiny specks, with appropriate weights obviously. In some levels the bricks will actually be shooting at you, so watch out for those arrows!

In Colibricks, you don’t rely on luck to finish a level. Prizes are not random, but tied to specific bricks in each level, often requiring special strategies to get to certain bricks to finish the rest of the level. Skill and smarts are what will give you high scores.

Control is via multitouch (one finger moving the paddle, an extra finger to release balls or fire the laser) or via tilt. Difficulty settings can be adjusted: apart from a “normal” and “easy” setting, you can also activate Training mode which allows you to adjust the paddle size, speed, number of lives, etc… High scores will not be recorded in that case, though.

Very Nice Industries, a New York based digital production boutique, announces the release of “Vis-à-Vis: RED“, an iPhone application designed for use with the RED One Digital Cinema Camera. Vis-à-Vis: RED is an intuitive guide to the extensive menu system on the RED One. The application provides users with a fully searchable interface allowing users to quickly access and learn about specific features of the RED One.

Howard Buksbaum, lead developer on the app says, “Knowing the ins and outs of the RED One® camera can make or break a shoot. With over 200 menus and settings, it can be difficult to fully understand what every setting does and where it appears in the menu structure. As avid users of the RED, we’re excited to give something back to the community of our fellow RED users that will be really useful to them in production. Our AC and Sound friends working with RED in the field are sure to appreciate it too…”

“We spent a lot of time making sure that a user’s search for an item they’d like to manipulate on their camera is quickly and easily found on our application, making it easier for both regular users and occasional users with limited time on a RED, to quickly find and adjust parameters on the camera and get on with the business of shooting.”

VNI’s Creative Director, Danny Ameri, who’s been beta testing the app says, “We want the application to provide users with maximum utility when they’re in the field and need a quick answer. And just as RED has listened closely to their customers, we will do the same. As we receive input on the initial release of the application, we’ll definitely incorporate it into development of future releases and upgrades.

The application was also designed as a compact study guide for aspiring users of the RED. “If you’ve never operated the camera, but want to familiarize yourself with what’s in store for you when you do, you can really get in touch with the functionality of the menus right in the palm of your hand. It’s almost like having a RED in your pocket. Well, not really, but not bad if you want to stay in touch with the camera.”

VNI invites all Red One® owners, renters, operators, DPs, ACs, enthusiasts and other members ever-growing RED community to check out our newest iPhone/iPod Touch App.

Also, a mysterious icon included in iPad promotional pictures gains attention, and Apple has expanded its site to explain features of the coming hardware in greater detail.

iPad sales estimated at 25,000 per hour

After it went on sale at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Friday, the iPad is estimated to have sold 51,000 in its first two hours. As discovered by Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune Brainstorm Tech, users at the Investor Village AAPL Sanity Board took their order numbers and attempted to crack the code to figure out total sales.

Victor Castroll, analyst with Valcent Financial Group and member of the AAPL Sanity Board, has been monitoring the spreadsheet and came up with the calculation of 51,000 units in the first two hours.

iPad preorder bumps Apple TV from front page of online store

In accepting preorders for the iPad on Friday, Apple made some minor adjustments to the front page of its online store. As a result, the Apple TV product and its accompanying picture were bumped and are no longer featured atop the store’s main page.

The Apple TV used to be featured prominently alongside the company’s line iPods, the iPhone and Macs. Now users must scroll down and find it in the left column under the “For iPod” heading.

Last month, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said his company still views the Apple TV as a “hobby,” and noted that sales of the product simply don’t compare to the consumer markets for smartphones, computers and MP3 players. Cook said he doesn’t believe the Apple TV will remain dormant, but it may take time for the potential market for the device to grow.

“Because our gut says something is there, we’re continuing to invest in this,” Cook said. “But today, it’s still just a hobby.”

Last October, Apple released the 3.0 software update for Apple TV, featuring a redesigned main menu that made navigating content simpler and faster. It also added support for the new iTunes LP and iTunes Extras formats.

Mysterious app icon gains attention

Apple updated its Web site with new pictures of the iPad Friday, and one screenshot in particular garnered attention from readers due to its inclusion of a mysterious icon. Included on the home screen Web page, the picture shows an icon on the far right of the device in landscape mode, and the application is not shown in any other screenshots.

Though the text is too small to read clearly, the icon appears to show the logo for the publication National Geographic. It’s likely that the icon is for a digital version of the magazine, to be sold through Apple’s iBookstore.

Apple expands on iPad features

As preorders began Friday, Apple also fleshed out the official iPad section of its Web site, adding greater detail on the iBooks application, 3G data subscriptions with AT&T, and more.

As before, all of the built-in applications on the iPad have their own page describing their function. Apple also has special dedicated pages for the iBooks application, which must be downloaded from the App Store, as well as the $9.99 Keynote, Pages and Numbers software.

A page devoted to 3G access on the iPad describes how users can start and cancel a no-contract data plan with AT&T direct from the device at any time. As was revealed at the product’s unveiling, the data plans run $15 per month for 250MB of data, or $30 per month for unlimited access.

Apple also updated its total number of applications available on the App Store to 150,000. When the iPad was first announced, the company advertised that more than 140,000 applications would be available for the device at launch.

Like the iPhone, the iPad automatically senses its orientation and adjusts its display between portrait and landscape modes with no user input required beyond turning the device. One common complaint among iPhone users has been, however, that there is no system-wide mechanism to lock the screen in one orientation. The lack of screen rotation lock on the iPhone is particularly frustrating to those attempting to use their devices while lying down on their sides and finding their iPhone rotating the display to an “upright” position.

Apple appears to have decided that this issue is important enough on the iPad to dedicate one of the device’s few hardware buttons to addressing it. Users wishing to quickly mute their iPads will apparently have to use other methods than a hardware button, such as onscreen controls or holding down the volume rocker switch to reach zero volume.

Apple sales representatives confirmed Friday morning that initial orders for both businesses and consumers are limited to two per person. The company has begun accepting preorders for the hardware’s debut, just over three weeks away.

In addition, AppleInsider has received word that the number of iPads shipped to each retail store location will be based solely on the number reserved for pickup at that store. In other words, fewer in-store reservations will mean a lighter stock of hardware.

People familiar with the matter said store employees have been told to encourage customers to preorder to ensure that their retail location will receive a higher number of iPads for the April 3 launch. Allegedly there will be enough stock at each store to fulfill preorders, but if a store doesn’t have a large number of devices reserved, there will not be many left over for those who did not preorder.

These details suggest Apple is facing a tight supply prior to the April 3 launch of the iPad. However, it’s also possible Apple could be limiting orders to create artificial demand, though there is no evidence to support this scenario.

Weeks ago, a handful of reports of manufacturing constraints suggested initial supply of the iPad could be limited. Analyst Peter misek with Canaccord Adams said checks with overseas suppliers suggested an “unspecified production problem” had led to a “manufacturing bottleneck,” potentially limiting the number of devices available at launch to 300,000.

Another report, from analyst Vijay Rakesh of Think Equity, said that initial shipment could be even lower, around 200,000, due to “minor delays” in production. His checks with suppliers said any delays were only expected to be temporary, and were not related to the device’s glass screen, or any issues in the manufacturing process.

A third report alleged that suppliers have had no issues in the manufacturing of the iPad, and expect Apple to ship between 600,000 and 700,000 devices at launch. That report claimed Apple would have the capacity to ship another 1 million iPads by the end of April.

Announced alongside the iPad’s introduction in late January, iWork for iPad will offer multi-touch versions of Apple’s Keynote, Pages, and Numbers productivity applications priced at $9.99 each through the App Store.

Keynote features 12 Apple-designed themes for users to choose from as a basis for their presentations, as well as tap-to-add functionality supporting photos, video, shapes, tables, charts, and text. Items can be easily dragged, resized, or rotated using the iPad’s multi-touch technology. Keynote also supports animations, as well as routing to external video displays using an optional iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter.

Document editing on the iPad is performed using Pages, which offers 16 templates for easy creation of simple text documents, newsletters, brochures, flyers, and other content. In landscape mode, Pages offers a large on-screen keyboard that enables rapid text entry, which is also facilitated by the iPad’s auto-correct feature that corrects spelling, inserts punctuations, and suggests words. Finally, Pages offer a number of page layout tools, allowing users to add and resize images, create lists, format text, and set margins, tabs, headers, and footers.

For Numbers, Apple highlights the 16 included templates for spreadsheet formatting, table functionality with automatic sum, min, max, and count display for data selections, and simple forms for easily entering data on the go and automatically updating spreadsheets. Finally, Numbers offers high-quality charts in a number of different styles that can be copied and pasted into Pages or Keynote documents, and multiple intelligent keyboard layouts to allow users to take full advantage of Numbers’ more than 250 functions.

All iWork applications for the iPad support import of their respective traditional iWork file formats, as well as the corresponding Microsoft Office formats. Users have the option of exporting their finished documents in iWork, Office, or PDF formats.

The iPad starts at $499 for the 16GB model with only Wi-Fi. The 32GB model costs $599 and the 64GB option runs $699. All three, if purchased via the Apple online store, will be delivered for free on April 3.

The models with both 3G and Wi-Fi carry a $130 premium, with the 16GB model costing $629, 32GB for $729 and 64GB for $829. Those models are due to ship in late April.

Apple noted if Saturday delivery is not available in a customer’s area, the iPad will be delivered on April 5.

The company also has an option to reserve the iPad for in-store pickup. The device will be available on April 3 at Apple’s retail stores from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The iPad also comes with complimentary telephone technical support for the first 90 days. The hardware, including the rechargeable battery and all accessories, carries a one year warranty. Coverage can be extended to two years with a $99 AppleCare protection plan.

Customers can also purchase accessories for the iPad, though shipping times are currently varied. The iPad Case, which runs $39, and the iPad Dock, for $29, are both expected to ship by April 3. The iPad Keyboard Dock is scheduled to ship in mid-April and costs $69.

The $29 iPad 10W USB Power Adapter ships in late April, while the $29 iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter ships by April 3. Finally, the Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic, which cost $79, ship within 24 hours.

The iPad box includes the device, a dock connector to USB cable, 10W USB Power Adapter, documentation, and a SIM eject tool with the 3G model. Mac users must have Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later, while PC users can run Windows XP with Service Pack 3 or later. Both require iTunes 9.0 or later.

First announced in January, the iPad is Apple’s long-awaited tablet device. It runs a new version of the iPhone mobile operating system and employs the same multi-touch interface that made the device one of the best-selling smartphones in the world.

In addition to browsing the Web, listening to music and watching movies, the iPad can also be used to purchase and read books, magazines and newspapers which will be available through the iBookstore, part of the iBooks application available for download through the App Store.

The iPad is 0.5 inches thick and weighs 1.5 pounds. It also reportedly delivers battery life of up to 10 hours. The device sports a 9.7-inch display and includes a 1GHz custom Apple-built A4 processor with the CPU and graphics on one chip.

The device has access to the App Store that has seen more than 140,000 applications released for the iPhone and iPod touch to date. Many of those applications will run on the iPad, though developers can write new, iPad-specific software for the hardware’s larger form factor. This week it was revealed that nearly 17,000 have been confirmed by developers to be compatible with the iPad. About 40 of those require the iPad 3G, which includes a GPS receiver.
