Football News Apps

ESPN Score Center
ESPN Score Center: Free

ESPN Score center for iPhone

The ESPN Score Center is a free app that offers features for the football fan and most any other sport you are in to.  One nice thing about this app is the ability to set up alerts so your iPhone can send you a notice at the start of the game, at the end of a quarter, or for each score in the game.

ScoreCenter Features:

* NFL Stats

* Personalized scoreboards and live game details

* Push Scoring Alerts: Full season and single game scoring alerts.

* myTeams: Follow all your favorite teams across sports with the new myTeams card. Set the app to launch myTeams first on every visit and your favorite teams’ scores are just one tap away

The myTeams feature is nice.  It allows you to set up the App to send you push notifications for your favorite teams.

On the down side the interface for this app is difficult to use, it seems more like a port form other ESPN Apps rather than an App built specifically for the iPhone.  Let’s hope that ESPN can find away to harness all this sports information in an app that feels like a native iPhone app.

It features tweets sent directly from some of your favorite National Football League stars. It allows you full access to the tweets sent and access to the news feed.

See what is happening first hand from the players on the field.

Sportacular: Free

Sportacular for the NFL fanSportacular is another general sports app that has football News, stats, and live updates.  It may be one of the best general sports apps going on the iPhone as it offers a great user interface and tons of information for the sports fan.

Fantasy Football Apps

The ESPN NFL Draft Kit:

ESPN NFL draft kit for iPhoneThe ESPN NFL Draft Kit has tons of information for the NFL fantasy player.  The app’s strong point are thumbnail profiles for many players—in addition to last season’s stats, you also get a paragraph of analysis from ESPN’s fantasy experts. The problem with the app is that all the information is really difficult to get to and navigate.  Like the ESPN Score Center App this app is difficult to use, poor interface, menus buried under other menus, etc.

It is too bad that ESPN can’t develop Apps for the iPhone that feel like native iPhone Apps.  Instead I feel like I am using a Palm App that has been ported to the iPhone.

Still looking for the perfect Pro Football App?

If you do a modest search on the web you will find users clamoring for an NFL app for the iPhone that is similar to the great app produced by MLB.

If such an app existed I would buy it today.

As it stands right now that is not possible.

In a 750 million dollar deal Verizon has paid the money to be the official mobile sponsor for the NFL.  So unless Apple opens up for a Verizon iPhone (wink wink) there will be no NFL app on the iPhone.

Let’s face it, the NFL is big business.  Because it is hot the NFL owners can charge what they want for rights to their broadcasts. They are not interested in selling you a $1.99 app when they can hit the folks up at Verizon for a cool 750 mil.

I used to be a NFL Sunday Ticket subscriber.  Every year the NFL continued to milk a little more money out of me in order to watch my favorite out of market team.  Finally I got out the calculator and figured it would cost me about $24 a game to watch my team on TV.  That was just for the NFL Sunday Ticket, that did not include the $130.00 ish a month that I was already paying DirectTV.  Enough was enough so I finally said no.

I still follow my team the best I can but I NEVER get a chance to watch them in my local market.  Am I still a fan, yep I love football, but maybe a little bit less of a fan due to the greed of the players, owners, and the NFL franchise that continue to demand more and more from their fans on a yearly basis.  At some point things will equalize as more and more people say no to the outrageous prices afforded by the NFL. Until then I will watch my local games and the brief highlights of my team on ESPN.
