Here are two quick questions to help you decide if you should download this app: Are you an American citizen? Do you vote? If you answered yes to these two questions then you have every reason to download this app immediately. MyGovernment is all about keeping you informed on what is happening in the government and giving you the tools to make your voice heard.
As far as I can tell there is no partisan bias in this app to speak of, unless you find any in the news articles that the app may link to. This app simply gives you the straight story on what’s going on in Congress. It also give you the tools to contact your local representative or state senator so you can make your voice heard. That’s what Democracy is all about right?
Here is the rundown on the information this app provides:
- Look up any Representative or Senator and find contact information (phone, fax, email, mailing address, twitter, website, etc.), add him/her directly to your contacts, view their info streams, committee memberships, and recent activity (as mentioned in the press).
- You can find out what bills are currently being considered or have been recently been passed by Congress, and read the full text of the bill if necessary, as well as see who sponsored and co-sponsored it.
- You can see spending by district, state, and contractor, as well as a breakdown of where the money is going.
- You can participate in community discussion of the current issues using a Google account to log on.
One bug I did find in the software is that if you turn your iPhone on its side to read a bill or article, the “back” icon disappears. This means you have to shut down the app then restart it just to get back to the main screens. So as long as you keep your iPhone vertical you can avoid this issue, and hopefully it will be quickly fixed by the developer.
Some say that it was Otto von Bismarck who said, “If you like laws and sausages, you should never watch either one being made.” On the other hand, if you want to make sure that your voice is heard on the issues that affect you, you need the information to do so. MyGovernment gives you the tools to know what is going on and to make your voice heard.
