Many business professionals who use Apple iPhones would love to use them like company-issued BlackBerrys or laptops so they could tap into such things as their corporate e-mail systems, customer contact lists, and accounting systems.

While options remain limited for using the iPhone like a networked computing client, they are expanding. Consider that when Apple’s App Store went online in July, Oracle and Salesforce.com were the only enterprise software vendors with offerings at the site. Within the past few months, however, at least a dozen additional offerings have come online at the App Store that were designed to give iPhone owners a mobile channel into employers’ computer systems.

What follows is a look at 10 enterprise-software oriented iPhone applications new to the App Store. In many cases, getting these applications to work may require the involvement of a company’s IT department or the presence of specific software applications on company servers.

1. Oracle recently posted Oracle Business Approvals for Sales Managers and Oracle Business Approvals for Managers on the App Store. With the first app, sales managers can use their iPhones to review sales quotes and approve or reject them, and chart sales forecasts, quotas, and actual numbers. The second application, designed more for a general management job, lets an iPhone user review expense reports, job postings, and purchase orders, for example. The free apps are designed for iPhone users whose companies have installed Oracle software connectors that provide the links back into corporate data systems.

2. For business analysts who use ActiveStrategy’s enterprise performance-management software, there is now ActiveStrategy Mobile at the App Store. Users can access balanced scorecards and other performance management tools from their iPhones. It’s free, but requires company installation of ActiveStrategy Enterprise Server 7.1 and Mobile Synchronization Server 1.0.

3. Omniture, the maker of software for monitoring Web site traffic and online marketing campaigns, is offering Omniture SiteCatalyst for the iPhone. Marketing employees and others who track Web site traffic can now view reports from their iPhones. Current Omniture customers can download the app for free and use the same user name and logon information they would use on a PC or laptop.

4. Salesforce.com recently posted an updated version of Salesforce Mobile for the iPhone, first made available in July at the App Store, to give salespeople access to contact and account information in Salesforce.com. The new version has a feature designed to appease corporate data-security watchdogs and keep sensitive customer data from landing in the wrong hands: if iPhone users go more than 10 minutes without using Salesforce Mobile, they’re locked out and have to log back on with a five-digit password. It’s free to Salesforce.com customers.

5. Excitor, a Denmark-based company focused primarily on the European market, is offering an iPhone version of its DME software for encrypted delivery of corporate e-mail to mobile phones. The app lets iPhone users get e-mail from their companies’ IBM Domino or Microsoft Exchange (as an alternative to Exchange ActiveSync) servers. The free app works if the user’s company has an ExcitorDME server gateway installed.

6. Model Metrics is offering a version of its Search2Go software that lets iPhone users search their companies’ Salesforce.com systems for contact and account information. Since it’s a read-only application, you don’t need approval or setup help from the IT department, or so claims Model Metrics. It’s priced at $19.99.

7. OpCenter offers QuickBooks Desktop Data on the GO!, which lets iPhone users view current balance sheets, expenses, sales orders, and accounts payable financial reports residing in QuickBooks Enterprise, Premier, or Pro systems. The cost to test it out is 99 cents; to get the live feed for your own company data, cost is $19.95 per month.

8. JAMF Software’s JSS Mobile lets IT pros manage their companies’ Mac systems from their iPhones. They can look up Macs on their networks and get such details as serial numbers, operating system version, processor, and user name and contact information. It’s free, but requires a license for Casper Suite, JAMF’s client-management software for Macintosh environments.

9. MochaSoft Apps offers TN3270, which turns your phone into an IBM 3278 terminal for accessing IBM mainframes. (It could be helpful to those whose companies run some custom applications and systems on mainframes). The Lite version is free; the bells-and-whistles version goes for $29.99.

10. Headlight Software’s FTP On The Go, targeted at IT pros and Web site administrators, lets iPhone users connect to an FTP server to make changes to the company Web site, for example. Headlight also suggests using it to link to an FTP server to get Word, Excel, or image files, make changes, and send them back. Cost is $9.99.

Via Skyworks® Interactive, creators of classic Atari-era favorites release “Arcade Hoops”

for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Available on iTunes

Hackensack, NJ, Nov. 4, 2008: Who but the youngest among us doesn’t recall whiling away hours on their Atari machine playing classic games like Pitfall, Decathlon or Donkey Kong? These games were easy to pick up, yet incredibly challenging, addictive, and above all fun. Now, two of the superstar designers of the Classic Game era are setting their sights on the iPhone and iPod touch, with the launch of Arcade Hoops.

David Crane and Garry Kitchen, classic game legends and co-founders of Activision and Absolute Entertainment (respectively), gave many of us our first introduction to video games with classic Atari 2600 titles like Pitfall, Donkey Kong, Keystone Kapers, and Decathlon. Now they are putting their skills to work at Skyworks Interactive, a leading developer of casual games (and the company behind the ESPN Arcade). The latest platform to benefit from their handiwork is the iPhone/iPod touch, with the release of Arcade Hoops. Arcade Hoops, a high speed simulation of the familiar arcade machine, challenges players to see how many baskets they can sink in 45 seconds. Life-like physics, realistic 3D graphics and a choice of three high energy soundtracks accompany the action – for the most fun humanly possible in under a minute.

And as if that weren’t enough, an advanced Progressive level features a moving basket and a chance to score even more points.

“Arcade Hoops was a true collaboration between David and myself. David developed the original game for the web and was the obvious choice to bring it over to the iPhone. But with David busy on other top secret projects I couldn’t wait any longer so I adapted it to the iPhone platform myself,” said Garry Kitchen, Arcade Hoops programmer and Skyworks COO. “We hope the audience will find Arcade Hoops to be at least as irresistible as any of our classic games.”

Arcade Hoops is just the first of a series of iPhone and iPod touch games planned from Skyworks. Several more will follow by year end, all promising the type of realistic and fast paced action that will set a new standard for iPhone and iPod touch games.

WallZ has been in the iTunes App Store for close to six weeks and it only has ONE user review? Daaaaang. It may not be The World’s Greatest Game but it’s definitely better than the low review count would suggest, and kudos to Gamer Outfit for not recruiting a bunch of their idiot friends to post [...]

Jirbo’s Turkey Hunt is Ghost Pop in disguise. Instead of tapping on ghosts like you did in their Halloween game, you’re tapping turkeys. Both games are completely identical but with different themes.
Yawn.
Still, if you need something to keep the kids out of your hair while you’re trying to cook an actual bird then it couldn’t [...]

There’s a reason Cube has only 2½ stars after 5000+ reviews: it’s practically unplayable! You have to admire fernLightning for attempting to put Quake on the iPhone, but this first-person-shooter isn’t even close to being ready for primetime.

NEWS RELEASE

Fully Available and Fully Re-Useable - Year on Year

Christmas is just around the corner and with only 35 days before the big day, Gourmet Pixel has announced the release of the first Advent Calendar application available on Apple’s iPhone and 2nd generation iPod Touch models.

Once downloaded, a countdown to the 1st of December greets the user upon first opening the application and once into December, the user is able to open each relevant window and in return, will receive an interactive gift, which culminates to a spectacular interactive finale on Christmas Eve.

Darren Lynch, Director, Gourmet Pixel, commented, “We are very pleased with this offering and hope people enjoy it. A lot of the standard individual elements built into 24 Christmas Days are actually being sold in a separated form by other developers as single apps, so we really do feel the app is great fun and utilises the iPhone’s cutting edge technology. The app can also be used year after year, so it really is cost effective. While it ticks all the boxes, in terms of classic Christmas imagery, watch out for some special surprises that our development team has added – it’s a real Christmas treat!”

The “24 Christmas Days” advent calendar is available to download from iTunes:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=295449610&mt=8

3D Fireworks is a pretty cool visual show that’s probably best suited for desk jockeys and frequent fliers on Air Bud. In case you’re too old (or too white!) to know what beatboxing is, it’s the art of literally using your mouth as a musical instrument. Beatboxers are known for doing a lot of percussion and record-scratching turntable noises, but the great ones can make sounds that mortal humans just shouldn’t be able to produce.
