According to Appleinsider.com

The forthcoming TomTom Car Kit navigation dock will not enable GPS functionality for the corresponding App Store software on the iPod touch and first-generation iPhone.

Company officials confirmed to AppleInsider Wednesday that although the Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, the TomTom application will only work with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G — even with the dock connected to a first-generation iPhone or iPod touch. Since it appeared for order on the Apple Store last week, the hardware’s Web page has read: “Note: The TomTom app for iPhone is not included with this TomTom Car Kit. The Car Kit dock is compatible with all iPhone models, but the Car Kit app only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.”

This Article is out dated and needs an update. Tom Tom DID add support for the GPS app for the iPod touch. They additionally added support for the first gen iPhone.

I bought this for my husband for his birthday over a month ago because it was top rated in Consumer Reports. Saying that my husband has no sense of direction would be an understatement. He goes “in the field” a lot for work and is always needing directions from MapQuest. Well, he doesn’t have to do that anymore because this Garmin is the best! He has not been lost even once since I bought this for him. He loves it and I love it! It gives him an ETA and alternate routes. We just can’t say enough good things about it. I highly recommend this navigation system.

Great product. Very quick in terms of calculating maps. The MP3 function is a good addition. Music stops when a direction is vocalized and the music continues right after it. Would be better if users can browse and choose songs with more freedom, for example, selecting each individual music sub-folders to play. Now once the GPS locate a music folder, it will combine all the songs into a big pool and ignore all the sub-folders definitions. Overall, it’s a very fine product. I would recommend to anyone.

I bought this GPS unit on the recommendation of Consumer Reports (June, 2008) and these Amazon.com entries. I’m in full agreement with the majority of owners that the Garmin nuvi 260w is a reliable five star-rated product and for those few who find technical problems or glitches (I too have found a couple) I’d give it a 4.9 rating if it existed. Like any piece of electronics there is the possibility major defects do indeed occur. If this is the case I’m certain the manufacturer and/or retailer will replace the unit. On the matter of price per unit I bought mine at Costco $249.99 which includes the Garmin Vehicle Power Cable that I suspect is lacking from other retailers. Amazon.com beats the competition like Best Buy by as much as 50% when it comes to accessories like the Garmin AC Power Cable or Portable Friction Dashboard Mount (free shipping and no taxes!), both of which I regard as necessities, not accessories!
